So little actual 'progress' took place this month that I can't be bothered to make one of those little graphics. I put 'progress' in parentheses because, while very little was actually made (physically), I've been working hard on digital prototypes, graphics, designs, mechanics, and much much more.
Caravans of CarRel saw a slew of play testing. Each test resulted in a near complete rework of the game. Each rework resulted in a near complete refresh of every one of the hundreds of cards and tokens that make up the game. So, it is taking a lot of time to get this thing right, but I am happy with where it is going.
Cards of CarRel is still in the production prototype phase. I made a couple versions of the cards this month; they are feeling good, looking good, and working just as I want them to (they do take a hot second to actually make, but hey, progress is progress). The box is a bit of a bear (reminds me of Cartography...). The working of the box is simple enough, it is just a standard tuck box. The design, however, is not feeling right to me. I'll keep at it and keep you posted along the way. Getting this right is very important to me, so I don't want to rush it.
Also Cards; I'm working on the second and third decks. I want to release the first three decks together if I can, as each adds a new element to the game as a whole and are a great place to get started. By 'working' on a deck, I mean I've already made the deck of 70 (72) cards based on theme and balance, I just need to make sure the abilities are worded correctly and that each card works well within the deck, but also beyond the deck (in the event of 'tournament' style play).
I'm also casually working on other games (I won't move forward with these until Cards and/or Caravans is done, but it is nice to have a foundation to work from when the time does come to move forward).
Cities of CarRel is a city-builder / engine builder style game that can work with Caravans and Cartography if you really want to get deep into a game setting (it works just fine by itself, the other games just add a little something if so desired).
Conquest of CarRel is a Risk-esque conquest game with more in-depth battle mechanics and army construction.
Courts of CarRel is a print-then-play game focusing on political intrigue, scheming, and clawing your way to the top.
There are literally dozens more at this simple phase, I just wanted to share a few that have been rattling around my brain.
That's all I got for the month.
Cheers.
July 2023
Once again, little actual 'progress' took place this month, so, once again, I can't be bothered to make one of those little graphics; but here's a little rundown of what's been going on:
Caravans of CarRel saw more play testing. The main work for this game this month was attempting to convert it to a print-and-play. I've come to the realization that in the coming months I will have a lot less time to produce the games I make, so, those that can be served by the print-and-play style shall be; this is one such game. Some of the conversion has been very easy and the final result is streamlined and pretty, some has been rather challenging and the current iteration is clunky and ugly; I'm working diligently to fix the latter. It'll get there.
Cards of CarRel had its first prototype / physical beta test shipped to a play testers! This is very exciting for me, and I am looking forward to hearing from the testers. I will work from their notes on design, mechanics, rules, etc. to make this thing something I am truly proud of. The other big shift this month (the first being the print-and-play on Caravans), is that I am now somewhat committed to having Cards professionally printed. I still want to do the boxes and shipping and rules and whatnot, but I simply cannot produce the quality of cards I am comfortable selling for a game that is literally all about the cards.
It may seem like not a lot is going on, but I assure you, I'm working! Stick with me!
Cheers.
August 2023
Hello there, it is that time again, time for me to tell you that not much LITERAL progress has been made. That said:
The conversion of Caravans of CarRel to a print and play is well under way. The reference sheets (so you know what you drew from a standard deck of cards) for characters, cities, special items, and encounters are all done. I'm still working out some balancing for the contracts in each city, but that will just take a few play throughs to get right. All that is left for reference sheets is the mule sheet, which I really just need to move over from my existing rapid prototype document to my more streamlined setup for all of the print and play nonsense. I've also made a lot of progress on maps; I've been having a lot of fun trying to blend a somewhat classic fantasy map style with my existing iconography from Cartography of CarRel. Otherwise, it is really just a matter of play testing to see if the conversion is successful, but I am confident this is something I can get done before summer is over.
I've started working on a creatures expansion for Cartography in which players draw a random animal and get extra points for placing it on their ever-expanding map of tiles; kind of like a little quest or something while laying tiles to give a little extra flair. I've made a spreadsheet of the animals I want to include as well as their tile requirements for placement / pertinent information, I am really just limited by my art skills (or lack there of), as it is taking forever to get the images of the animals where I want them to be.
I've also started to flesh out Conquest of CarRel a little more. This is still a long term project, but I am liking where it is going.
I am in a bit of a holding pattern on Cards of CarRel, getting people together to play test such a complicated game is kinda a big ask during the summer. So, this might develop a bit more as winter approaches. Otherwise, I've just been dividing my existing 1076 cards into roughly thematic or mechanically similar decks, tweaking various bits as I go. It is a tedious process, especially since I made many of these cards two or three years ago and the game has changed quite a bit since then, so abilities, geographies, affiliations, etc. need to be altered. But, I am having fun getting back into the head of past Kev and making the cards fit into the new systems. This is going to transition into a major long term project, I want it to be perfect (or as perfect as I can make it), so I don't want to rush.
I haven't picked up Coloring of CarRel in a while, but I am kinda starting to feel the itch to start it back up again to finish off part 1. Maybe by the end of summer...
That's all for this month. I hope this informal check in is giving y'all a good enough feel for what I'm doing and why. If not, feel free to reach out (contact info in the footer).
Cheers!
September 2023
Rapid fire:
Been working on a wooden version of Cartography of CarRel using a laser engraver; pretty neat, might take a while to get just right
Been working on converting Caravans of CarRel to a print and play; slow going, but getting there
Been messing around with some other ideas: mainly, a pretty groovy combat system for Conquest of CarRel, I like it, might keep parts of it and try to make it a little simpler for quicker play
And that's it for the month!
October 2023
My wife gave birth to our beautiful baby girl last month! So I've been busy being a father. Funny thing about babies though, they don't mind sleeping on a pillow in your lap while you work on the computer all night; they actually love it!
I've pretty much wrapped up chapters 6 and 7 of Coloring over the last week, just need to print them and test them and they are good to go. THAT MEANS, part 1 of Coloring is almost done! Woot! I'll package all 7 chapters up and replace the individual ones with the one big boy. Moving forward, the Coloring chapters will be more focused on coloring pages and less on puzzles and keywords and such; this will be more fun for me and more fun for you, I think.
I've also made a lot of progress on the art assets for Creatures of CarRel, a little add-on to Cartography I've been working on. I've included one example card above. But, there is still a bit to go before it is a functioning game. I'll keep you posted.
That's it!

Kev
November 2023
I got a working prototype of Creatures of CarRel done and have started testing and tweaking where necessary. Not going to lie, it is pretty darn fun! I just gotta do the stupid box now...
Otherwise, I've just been dabbling in the start of part 2 of Coloring, Persia is the first chapter, I have 1 page done and all the rest planned and composed.
Light month, newborn and such.

Kev
December 2023
I got a better working prototype of Creatures of CarRel done and have continued testing and tweaking where necessary. The box is coming along, but it isn't 'perfect' yet so I'll keep at it.
Cards of CarRel is on my mind too. I've been working on sorting out the thousand or so individual cards I have in a rough draft state into thematically relevant and mechanically neat decks to get a better idea of what work I need to do on them. I'm also waffling on how to best distribute these. Not only physically, ie professional print, personal print with plastic coating, or personal print on nice cardstock with an option of adding plastic sleeves if the shuffling is too difficult for y'all; but also conceptually, ie 1 deck at a time, a few decks that make sense together, or ALL of them in one chongo glorious mega box that will take forever to make and probably cost too much to buy... So, if anyone reading this has any thoughts, use the contact email below to let me know.
Caravans has taken a backseat lately, but I am gearing up to finish this sucker off sometime in Winter or Spring of 2024. I've taken so long off from it that it will take me a hot second to get my head wrapped back around it in order to complete the transition to print and play. It is still a game I am very much in like with, but it is a bear to keep track of all of the different iterations and small tweaks I've put it through. I'll be glad when it is done and you all can enjoy it!
I've also been toying around with high-level concepts for other games (Conquest, Campaigns, Court, Proving Grounds: A CarRel Games Story, etc), nothing concrete, but it is nice to know that even with a tired brain and body I can come up with new ideas! By the way, that last one, Proving Grounds, is something special I think; it'll take me a good while to flesh it out, but it is something I am good and excited for.
Another light month. The baby is very chill, but she is still a baby and requires / deserves most of my attention (no regrets!).

January 2024
A little more prototyping on Creatures.
More planning on Part II of Coloring.
An early attempt at converting Coloring Part I to a physical product. There are note pages between the coloring and map pages of the digital product, with a thick chipboard backing, and a 2 to 1 (2 holes in 1 inch) metal clip binding. I'm happy with it so far, I just want to tweak the margins and some of the page compositions before finalizing. It'll be between 50 and 60 pages and I think something I can realistically get done pretty quickly even with a needy baby kicking around (love you so much, baby child).
I read the Wager, by David Grann last month and was inspired to start thinking more about Captains of CarRel (or Commodores?) which would be something like Risk and Battleship put together with engine-building elements and maybe some resource management and whatnot to add some spice. Like most of my ideas, I'm not going to delve too deeply into it until I get some of my existing works to a finished stage, but still, it is always nice to stretch the ol' brain every once in a while.
And that's it. Another light month on actual production, but still lots of thought and care going into this silly little hobby.
Love,
Kev
February 2024
More conversion of Coloring Part I into a physical notebook that has led me on a stationary tangent. Made some journals. Cut some paper. Feels good to work with my hands a bit.
More work on converting Caravans into a print and play, kinda got a little bit of a trick-taking thing going on with battle instead of the incredibly elaborate encounter system we used to have. Making progress, feels good.
More thoughts on silly things that are well beyond my grasp at this point (rework of Cards of CarRel to make it simpler and more fun, Conquest, Campaigns, Commodores, Commanders, etc.). I need to focus on one thing at a time, but my brain is averse to focus. I'll do my best.

March 2024
This month I got the rest of the materials together that I needed to start churning on Coloring Part II. I have done 3 of the 50 coloring sheets... It might not sound like a lot... And it really isn't in the grand scheme of things, but it is all I have had time for (I only have so much computer time with a 6 month old baby to care for and love and such). All that said, Part II will be simpler for me to put together, and, I think, more enjoyable for you all to use. I'm opting for a total coloring pack: no puzzles, no key words, no studying maps and such. For each chapter: just a blank map of the region being discussed, a blank timeline, and 10 coloring pages. I hope this will make the material more usable as an actual study aid.
Beyond this, I've been working on the Caravans of CarRel conversion to a print and play. A lot of thinking and casual testing is going into this. Once it is more fleshed out, I will do more serious testing. Until then, I am pleased with the progress.
I've begun redesigning the cards for Cards of CarRel. I have learned a lot about what I actually want from this game, and what I had, though fun and deep and crunchy, was not it. I'm making the cards simpler, with fewer abilities (one or two per card tops) and I am making them physically smaller (business card size instead of playing card size). I am also getting rid of a number of the mechanics and systems I labored over for months and months in favor of a much simpler system that will hopefully be easier to get into but will also be just as fun. I've known for a long time that my original game was in need of an overhaul, but it is very difficult to blow up something you have put hundreds of hours into. This month, I pulled the trigger and went for it. No regrets.
Cards of CarRel roadmap:
Blow up the Cards of CarRel page on this website to reflect my silliness.
Read at least 1 more US history text book to help pick out the most significant figures and events and to organize cards into thematic or chronological decks of 70 (constructed decks for easy, out of the box play), and 10 (addendum decks for the development of personal decks as well as for expanded addendum mode games with a related constructed deck).
Right now it is looking like 10ish constructed decks and maybe double that in addendum decks... But that will change.
I've gone back in and set up Deck 1: The Revolution that is 70 cards dealing with the years leading up to and through the American Revolution. There are 35 biography (figure) cards, 32 journal (event) cards, and 3 atlas (geography) cards. The cost curve is just how I like it, the abilities feel tight, and the journal cards don't feel overpowered; I need to test more, but I'm pleased. This reconstruction of a deck took me 12 hours.
Now I just need to do this a dozen or so more times...
Transfer what I can from the old game to the new (I.E. transfer abilities, stats, costs, etc. from existing cards to the new).
This will require the establishment of new rules and mechanics and whatnot; I'm going to let this come mostly from pulling apart decks and seeing what I like and what I don't, I've already trashed a bunch of stuff that will make the game cleaner. Heck, maybe the BASIC rules won't be 30 pages anymore...
Finish redesign of the cards.
Redesign rules (maybe I can get away without a Comprehensive rule set and just have a basic one...).
Test. Test. Test.
Print prototypes (I do this on my own, and I will continue to).
Publish and relax for half a second before starting on world history...
I've already started reading 3 different textbooks and organizing notes from past history courses in preparation.
Lastly, I've been thinking about and casually testing tokens for Conquest of CarRel. I think they are simple and easy enough for me to produce on my own but also neat enough that I won't be ashamed to share them with you all.
Overall, a productive and satisfying month over here at CarRel Games; I hope it was for you as well!

Kev
April 2024
Not going to lie, it has been a nice early Spring and I have been spending the majority of my rare spare time getting the garden in place.
That said... I'm cooking on the Caravans of CarRel print and play conversion. It is feeling nice, slick, and groovy. I've been testing and working and testing some more. Progress.
I did a classic Kevin and started a new game... I'm sorry, I can't help myself. Crops of CarRel is simple, elegant, and maybe something I could actually get to 'market' at the same time I wrap up the stupid box for Creatures of CarRel. Oh yeah, in case I haven't mentioned it in a while, THAT is pretty much the only thing keeping me from pushing that gem. Boxes are hard, and I want to get it right. Anyway, Crops; it has cards (cards with rules)... And that is about it. Dead simple. I dig it. Just getting the art together (it is simple vector stuff, nothing too fancy) and dinking around with the rules and whatnot. Earlyish days, but seriously, this one could be done before all the rest that I've been trudging through over the past year plus. We shall see.
That's it. Light month. Hope to move more next.

May 2024
Every second I had to spend on games this month was devoted to Caravans of CarRel. It is shaping into something I am rather happy with, and eager to get into a fully playable state. I've added abilities and unlocks and markets and NARATIVE elements I am close to proud of (they still need some work before I'm truly proud enough of them to share). I've been testing individual parts, namely, the combat and encounter system. It is pretty slick and easy but with enough depth in preparation and character construction that players ought to feel like they are making a difference in what would otherwise feel random or lucky. Don't get me wrong, there is still a random element to it (we are dealing with cards after all), but how a player builds up their character is very much the deciding factor in if the encounter will end in the player's favor.
That's it for the month. Everything is slower with a baby around. But I'm happy with that. It makes the time I do have to dink around with some creative ideas feel even more special. And who knows, maybe some of these ideas will turn into something I can share with my precious baby when she gets a little older.

June 2024
I took a small break from not finishing anything ever to quickly finish up something to get on my Etsy page which, if you know me, you know is not easy for me; I am something of a perfectionist and 'finishing' anything is always a challenge because I always see fault in anything I do/make. But hey, I made a small notebook. I'd been practicing making things like this for a few months (for rule books and such) and got to a point where I felt confident in making a simple one consistently. So, there ya go, I made a simple, cheap thing people can actually get and hold and feel and use. Not bad. But it isn't directly game-related.
Speaking of not game-related, I am using my laser engraver to make a hex-based map of the world with fun designs and whatnot. It is meant as a gift for some dear friends, but I think it is turning out really cool and might try to make a few for purchase. Or not. Who knows. Either way, this is great practice using the laser engraver that I hope to use to male a wood version of Cartography of CarRel sometime in the next year. Ought to be pretty fun, pretty neat, pretty sleek, etc.
Game-wise: I'm jammin' on Caravans of CarRel still. I play tested it a few times by myself (even though it is a 2-4 player game) and let me tell you, it is really fun. I'm working now on balancing abilities and probabilities and whatnot to make it feel fair. I will continue to play test and tweak it until it gets to a point where I am comfortable releasing it. This is a great one for me to be focusing on because it will be a digital product, so if I need to make any changes, I just can. Makes me happy.
Also, I'm slowly working through a medieval history book, taking notes and getting ideas for Cards of CarRel figures, events, places, and things. I am also still reworking the old U.S. history cards into the new, simpler, smaller format. It is slow-going, but it is looking and feeling good. I also have a few world history books that I am going to start with to get an outline for the more zoomed out scope of the game. At this point, it might be easier for me to just go ham on world history to start, then come back to U.S. as a more focused expansion... I don't pretend to know how my brain works (or doesn't), but this somehow feels like the play when it comes time to crunch on Cards; not that said time is fast-approaching... We'll see.
I'm always thinking and moving things around in my head and working on what I can when I can; but I'm not fast. Never have been. Never will be. We'll get there though.

Kev
July 2024
Quickly:
I finished the laser engraving gift for my friends. It turned out great, but it is certainly a one-of-a-kind thing. It ended up being 154 tiles. My little machine can do 5 at a time. Each set of 5 takes about an hour (front and back), not including the finishing process (linseed oil, drilling a hole for a small nail, etc.). So, yeah, this took a long time that I do not have. A smaller version however... totally doable, and I may pursue it in the near future.
I have begun the newest iteration of the Caravans of CarRel rules. I am pretty close to getting it ready to share with my play testers (I like to have things pretty much "done" before sharing, I don't want to waste their time). I have changed around some of the minor skill-related aspects of the game and am pretty darn happy with it. Moving along as fast as I am able.
As always, I am getting ideas for Cards of CarRel. This month's main thought has been on affiliations and how to streamline and improve them. I'm thinking of adding things like sex or gender as a symbol on each biography card (where applicable); I initially was going to avoid this, as I didn't want to open myself up to criticism on that front, but I now realize the lack of that definition has limited some abilities and neat interactions that I could include (E.G. not all women are feminists, but a lot of the feminist figures in the game could benefit all female figures). So, I'm going to do my best to carefully add this to the biography cards; I may make mistakes, but know I am trying my best. In general, I am pleased with where things are at with this game. It is my labor of love right now, I hope to finish it up someday so I can obsess over something else. Until then, it is occupying my thoughts and my dreams, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
That's it for this month. Light. But as always, good.

Kev
August 2024
Made a laser engraved thing, gonna put it up on Etsy as soon as I have time to make the listing and finish off instructions for the 'game' / homeschool application of the thing. It is a map of the world in 75 hexagonal tiles with numbers on the back side. The idea is that you flip a tile when you travel to a place or learning something new about it. Pretty simple, pretty fun to make. I'll probably just make one at a time for now, they take a while to engrave and finish and I am not made of hours at the moment.
Games are in my brain, but not at my fingertips. They are all going places, just not quickly while I have a little one to care for.

September 2024
I've been working on Caravans of CarRel. As always, it is slow going. I want it to be tight and good and crunchy and polished. Difficult to do when you only get a few hours a week to dive into it. But we're getting there.
Made a practice box for Creatures of CarRel. The game is done. It is simple. The box is imperfect, and that is driving me bananas. Getting there though. The new one is sturdy, and not too difficult to make. Promising.
I'm laser engraving a copy of Cartography of CarRel in some thin wood. It is looking good, I might make this a thing on Etsy. Probably just one or two at a time, since it takes forever for my little machine to get 90 pieces done.
I've been powering through a 179 episode history podcast on the history of Rome (Western Empire), and it is daily inspiring me to think about and work on Cards of CarRel. I'm liking where it is going, but it is still the most complicated game I am currently working on, so it'll be a hot minute.
That's it. Moving as best I can.

October 2024
I finished the first chapter of the second part of Coloring of CarRel (10 coloring pages for Persia between 500 BCE and 500 CE). I've come up with a pretty okay system for getting these done while my child naps, so I expect to get more of these going sooner than anything else I've got in the works.
I finished the laser engraving of a wood version of Cartography of CarRel. It took forever because I have a small laser engraver and because I only have so much time in the day to monitor it and switch the pieces after each pass. But, it turned out pretty neat; I need to clean it up and get it sealed in linseed oil, then I will probably list it on Etsy. It won't be nearly as affordable as the cardstock copy, so only consider it if you already know you like the game and just want a sturdier version.
I've only been thinking about Caravans of CarRel. No progress has been made. If anything, I may be going backwards on it. It doesn't spark the same joy as it did as a more fleshed out game (i.e. before I started the print and play conversion). I am committed to the print and play thing for this one, so I think I may just need to take what I like and rebuild. I like the card play and various story and mechanical elements, but I don't like the caravanning. I want it to feel different and substantial and cool. I have an idea for it, I just need to write it up and test it. Hopefully next month...
I'm still working on boxes for a bunch of stuff (Creatures, Cards, etc). I have them pretty sturdy and handsome, I just need to make them consistently the exact same size. Slow progress, as with most things here, but progress.
That's it. That's all.

January 2025
Made a new prototype box for Creatures. It is a lot more durable, but far more time-consuming. I think it is a step in the right direction, but I'm still not happy with it. Making slow progress.
I also started a miniature version of Coloring that will take a bit of time. It is something I can pick up and knock out 15 minutes at a time so I think I can manage some progress more regularly. I am slowly forcing myself to transition to this sort of work. I don't have the time to focus on something for 4 or 5 hours a day like I used to. I have maybe 30 minutes at the end of the day, and I need to find things to slot into that. Working on it, hope it will become as rewarding (mentally) as the binge work sessions I used to enjoy. Time will tell.
